What is a death doula?

An End-of-Life or Death Doula is a trained, non-medical support companion who helps individuals and their loved ones navigate the emotional, practical, and spiritual aspects of dying, death, and grief. Much like a birth doula supports the arrival of life, a death doula supports the departure — offering presence, guidance, and comfort during one of life’s most profound transitions.

Death doulas provide a wide range of support based on each person’s unique needs and wishes. This can include assisting with advance care planning, facilitating conversations about end-of-life choices, creating meaningful rituals and legacy projects, providing vigil support, and holding space for families before, during, and after death.

At its heart, death doula work is about ensuring that this final chapter is approached with dignity, compassion, and intention — helping individuals feel seen, supported, and empowered to make choices that reflect their values and beliefs.
