What is a Doula?

What is a doula?

Life is full of moments of profound change—beginnings, endings, and everything in between. A doula offers compassionate, non-medical support during these transitions, providing presence, knowledge, and care when it’s needed most.

At their heart, doulas walk beside individuals and families—holding space, easing overwhelm, and ensuring no one has to navigate life’s most tender seasons alone.

Across all stages—birth, loss, beginnings, and endings—doulas provide non-judgmental, holistic support that honours your choices, values, and story. We do not replace medical care, but complement it by focusing on the emotional, spiritual, and human side of life’s transitions.

Our role is simple yet powerful: to ensure you feel seen, supported, and never alone.

Doula Modalities

Fertility Doula

A fertility doula provides compassionate support to individuals and families as they navigate the often emotional and complex journey toward conception. Whether trying to conceive naturally or with assisted reproductive technologies, a fertility doula offers encouragement, education, and holistic care tailored to each unique path.

A fertility doula does not replace medical care, but walks beside families with care and compassion—reminding them that their journey is not one they have to travel alone.

    • Emotional Support – A steady, empathetic presence through the ups and downs of fertility journeys.

    • Practical Guidance – Resources, information, and evidence-based options to help clients make informed choices.

    • Mind-Body Support – Relaxation techniques, stress management tools, and holistic practices to nurture overall well-being.

    • Advocacy – Helping clients feel confident and heard in medical settings, ensuring their needs and wishes are respected.

    • Partner & Family Support – Encouragement and tools to strengthen communication and connection during what can be a stressful time.

Birth Doula

A birth doula provides continuous, compassionate support throughout pregnancy, labor, and birth. Their role is to walk alongside families with encouragement, knowledge, and care so that each person feels informed, supported, and empowered in their birth experience. A birth doula does not replace medical providers but works alongside them to ensure clients feel heard, respected, and cared for. Their focus is always on empowering families and helping them navigate birth with confidence and support.

    • Pregnancy Support – Guidance, resources, and preparation for birth, including comfort measures, planning, and evidence-based information.

    • Labor & Birth Support – Continuous presence during labor to provide physical comfort, emotional reassurance, advocacy, and practical tools for pain relief and relaxation.

    • Partner Support – Helping partners feel confident and involved by offering suggestions, encouragement, and reassurance.

    • Post-Birth Care – Assistance in the early hours after birth with recovery, feeding, bonding, and settling into the new family rhythm.

Postpartum Doula

A postpartum doula provides nurturing, hands-on support for families as they adjust to life with a new baby. Their role is to ease the transition after birth by offering practical help, emotional care, and guidance during the early weeks and months of parenthood. A postpartum doula does not take over but instead empowers families to find their own rhythm, building confidence and calm as they step into this new chapter.

    • Emotional Support – A compassionate presence to listen, validate, and encourage during the many shifts of the postpartum period.

    • Newborn Care Guidance – Help with feeding (breast/chest/bottle), soothing techniques, sleep, and understanding baby’s cues.

    • Practical Household Support – Light meal prep, tidying, and easing the daily load so families can focus on rest and bonding.

    • Parental Confidence & Education – Evidence-based information on recovery, infant care, and resources tailored to each family’s needs.

    • Family & Partner Support – Helping the whole household adjust, including siblings and partners, so everyone feels supported.

Grief & Loss Doula

A loss doula offers gentle, compassionate support to individuals and families experiencing pregnancy or infant loss. Their role is to walk beside grieving parents with care, resources, and comfort—ensuring no one has to face loss alone.
A loss doula does not replace professional medical or mental health care, but instead offers a steady, compassionate presence—helping families navigate loss with dignity, love, and support.

    • Emotional Support – A calm and empathetic presence to listen, validate feelings, and hold space for grief in all its forms.

    • Practical Guidance – Assistance with navigating choices around miscarriage, stillbirth, termination for medical reasons, or infant loss.

    • Advocacy & Presence – Support in medical settings, helping clients understand their options and ensuring their wishes are honored.

    • Remembrance & Ritual – Guidance in creating meaningful ways to honor and remember a baby’s life, however brief.

    • Aftercare & Resources – Continued support in the days, weeks, and months following loss, including connections to grief resources and support networks.

End-of-Life/Death Doula

An end-of-life doula (sometimes called a death doula) provides compassionate, non-medical support to individuals and families as they navigate the final stages of life. Their role is to bring comfort, presence, and guidance during one of life’s most profound transitions.

An end-of-life doula does not replace hospice or medical teams, but complements them by focusing on the emotional, spiritual, and human side of dying, ensuring the process is met with dignity, compassion, and care.

    • Emotional & Spiritual Support – A calm, grounding presence for both the dying person and their loved ones, honoring their values, beliefs, and wishes.

    • Practical Guidance – Help with creating legacy projects, memory-making, advance care planning, and navigating choices around end-of-life care.

    • Comfort Measures – Gentle, non-medical support to ease the environment—through calming rituals, relaxation techniques, and presence.

    • Family Support – Holding space for loved ones, offering resources, and helping them feel more prepared and supported through the process.

    • After-Death Care – Guidance and support for the immediate hours and days after death, including remembrance practices and connecting families with ongoing grief resources.
