Beyond birth. Beyond the basics. Supporting life in all its transitions.
Doula care is about more than one moment in life, and we believe your education should reflect that.
Our immersive 12-month training program goes beyond foundational doula education, exploring the full spectrum of care from fertility, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum to reproductive experiences, loss, grief, menopause, aging, and end-of-life support.
Through monthly immersive weekends, hands-on learning, real-world experiences, meaningful community connections, and personalized mentorship, you'll gain the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to support people through life's most profound transitions.
One weekend a month. Twelve months of learning. A whole lifetime of care.

What You’ll Learn: A Monthly, In-Person, Module-Based Journey
-
The transition after birth deserves just as much care and preparation as birth itself.
This module explores physical postpartum recovery, emotional adjustment, the fourth trimester, family transitions, bonding, attachment, newborn behaviour, infant care and the enormous identity shift that can accompany becoming or expanding a family.
Students develop practical knowledge of lactation, pumping, bottle feeding, formula feeding, combination feeding and common feeding challenges while learning to recognize when support needs to move beyond the doula's scope to a lactation or healthcare professional.
We also explore infant sleep literacy, postpartum planning, partner support, household and sibling transitions, postpartum mental health and the practical realities of caring for families in their homes.
Feeding and parenting are approached without hierarchy or shame. Our role is to provide evidence-informed education, practical support and encouragement while respecting each family's circumstances, culture, capacity and choices.
-
Loss changes the landscape of a family, and compassionate support cannot end when a pregnancy or baby dies.
This module prepares doulas to accompany families through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, neonatal and infant death, pregnancy after loss and the many forms of grief that can surround reproductive experiences.
Students learn about grief and bereavement, memory-making, ritual, legacy work, sibling support, partner grief, family dynamics, funeral and memorial considerations and continuing support in the days, weeks and months following a loss.
We explore how grief can look profoundly different between people and cultures, including disenfranchised grief and losses that may not be recognized or understood by the broader community.
Rather than searching for the perfect words, students learn how to offer something often far more meaningful: presence, practical care, acknowledgement and permission for grief to exist exactly as it does.
-
Full life spectrum doula care also means supporting people as life begins to narrow, priorities change and conversations about dying become part of living.
Students explore aging, serious and life limiting illness, caregiver support, anticipatory grief and the emotional and practical realities families may encounter as someone approaches the end of life.
A significant focus is placed on advance care planning, values based conversations, wishes for care, substitute decision-making and helping people communicate what matters most to them before a crisis occurs.
Students learn how doulas can support individuals and families in preparing for end of life, navigating changing roles, facilitating meaningful conversations, organizing practical needs and creating space for legacy, ritual and connection.
Death is not treated as a failure of care. We explore how preparation, information and compassionate conversation can help people approach dying with greater agency and understanding.
-
What happens when someone is actively dying, and what does a family need when death is no longer an abstract possibility but something happening in the room?
This module moves deeply into end-of-life and death doula practice within the Canadian and Ontario context.
Students explore palliative and hospice care, home-based dying, Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), healthcare and community resources, and the doula's role alongside medical, palliative, hospice and funeral professionals.
We examine the physical signs and common changes that occur during active dying, comfort-focused non-medical support, vigilling, family coordination, bedside presence, cultural and spiritual practices and supporting loved ones through the final hours and moments of life.
Learning continues beyond the moment of death. Students develop literacy around what happens immediately afterward, including expected and unexpected death processes, pronouncement and certification, after-death body care, family rituals, funeral homes, burial, cremation and other disposition considerations.
The focus throughout is dignity, choice, presence and helping families understand what is happening so that fear of the unknown does not have to fill the entire room.
-
Compassionate care needs a sustainable foundation.
This module bridges doula work with the practical realities of building and maintaining an ethical professional practice.
Students explore consultations, client intake, documentation, contracts, communication, pricing, packages, accessibility, referrals, collaborative care, community partnerships, branding, marketing, business systems and professional boundaries.
We also talk candidly about money, accessibility and sustainability. Students explore sliding scales, payment plans, pro bono care and community based models while recognizing that doulas deserve to build practices that financially and emotionally sustain them.
Just as importantly, students examine burnout, compassion fatigue, boundaries, debriefing, peer support and the emotional weight of caregiving work.
We reject the idea that being deeply caring requires endless self-sacrifice. Sustainable doulas are better able to continue showing up for their communities.
-
Doula work can begin with one person and ripple outward into an entire community.
Our final module explores the ways doulas can grow beyond individual client care into education, mentorship, facilitation, leadership, advocacy and community building.
Students learn foundational skills for childbirth and community education, workshop development, facilitation, public speaking, mentorship, peer support, reflective practice, resource development and collaborative leadership.
We explore how doulas can identify gaps in their communities and imagine creative ways to respond through classes, support groups, community programming, partnerships, advocacy and collective models of care.
Most importantly, this module brings us back to the philosophy at the centre of the Academy: collaboration over competition.
We are not training doulas to work in isolation. We are developing practitioners who understand that none of us can, or should, meet every need. Strong communities are built when doulas know their strengths, recognize their limits, share knowledge, refer generously, learn from one another and build relationships across professions and lived experiences.
The Academy ends not by asking, “How do I build my practice?” but by expanding the question:
“How do we build an ecosystem of care where more people are supported?”
-
What does it really mean to be a doula?
We begin by exploring the foundations of doula care and the philosophy that guides everything we do at The Collaborative Doula Academy: that people deserve compassionate, informed, non-judgmental support throughout the full spectrum of life.
Students explore the role and scope of the doula, ethics, boundaries, confidentiality, consent, informed choice, advocacy, documentation, communication and interdisciplinary collaboration. We examine what it means to provide trauma-informed, person-centred and culturally responsive care while understanding where doula support begins, where it ends, and when another professional needs to be brought into the circle of care.
Rather than preparing doulas for one particular type of client or experience, this module establishes the foundation for supporting people through fertility, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, loss, reproductive choices, illness, aging, dying, death and grief.
The goal is not to become everything to everyone. It is to understand how to walk alongside someone well.
-
Before we can hold space for someone else, we need to understand what we bring into that space ourselves.
This module invites students to explore identity, privilege, power, implicit bias, lived experience, cultural humility and the ways our own beliefs can influence the care we provide. Students develop emotional intelligence and communication skills while learning how to build relationships rooted in trust, curiosity, respect and autonomy.
We explore advocacy without speaking over clients, supporting informed decision-making without directing it, navigating conflict, recognizing systemic barriers, and creating more accessible and inclusive care for individuals and families whose identities, cultures, bodies, abilities, relationships or choices may differ from our own.
Students are encouraged to become reflective practitioners who can recognize when their own experiences are entering the room and intentionally return the focus to the person they are supporting.
-
Doulas often meet people during some of the most emotionally intense periods of their lives.
This module builds the knowledge and confidence needed to recognize and respond appropriately to mental health concerns while remaining firmly within the doula's non-clinical scope of practice.
Students explore perinatal and reproductive mental health, anxiety, depression, trauma responses, overwhelm, caregiver distress, grief-related mental health experiences, nervous system regulation, suicide awareness and prevention, crisis response, safety considerations and pathways to professional support.
We also examine how doulas can provide grounding, co-regulation, practical support and compassionate presence without attempting to diagnose, treat or become someone's therapist.
A central focus is learning the difference between holding space and holding responsibility that does not belong to us.
-
Not every experience can be fixed, reframed or made better. Sometimes our work is simply to remain.
This module explores one of the most important skills in full life spectrum doula care: learning how to be present when things are complicated, uncertain, uncomfortable or deeply painful.
Students develop practical skills for trauma- and grief-informed support, difficult conversations, emotional regulation, anticipatory grief, ambiguous and disenfranchised loss, changing relationships, family dynamics and experiences that do not have simple answers.
We explore what holding space actually looks and sounds like, including silence, reflective listening, validation, compassionate communication, grounding, boundaries and knowing when not to say something.
Students practise sitting with uncertainty rather than rushing toward reassurance, solutions or positivity, creating space for people to experience their own emotions and make meaning in their own way.
-
There is no single path to pregnancy, parenthood or reproductive decision-making.
This module explores the many reproductive journeys doulas may be invited into, including fertility awareness, preconception, infertility, assisted reproductive technologies such as IUI and IVF, donor conception, surrogacy, early pregnancy and diverse pathways to creating a family.
Students also explore abortion support, pregnancy decision-making and termination for medical reasons (TFMR), learning how to provide compassionate and judgment-free support regardless of the choices a client makes.
We examine the physical, emotional, relational and logistical realities that can accompany fertility treatment and reproductive experiences, along with the grief, hope, uncertainty and complex emotions that may coexist within them.
Students learn how to support the person in front of them rather than assuming what pregnancy, parenthood, fertility or reproductive loss is supposed to mean.
-
Birth support is about far more than comfort measures.
Students develop a strong understanding of pregnancy physiology, prenatal care, anatomy, fetal positioning, the stages and physiology of labour, comfort techniques, movement, positioning and partner support.
We explore common interventions and procedures including induction, augmentation, fetal monitoring, pain medication, assisted birth and Cesarean birth, alongside VBAC, home birth, hospital birth and birth-centre care.
Throughout the module, students learn how to help clients understand their options, ask meaningful questions, communicate with their healthcare team and participate actively in decisions about their own care.
Hands-on learning allows students to practise labour positions, comfort measures, advocacy conversations, birth planning and real-world scenarios.
The goal is not to teach doulas how to create a particular kind of birth. It is to prepare them to support people through their birth, including when plans change.
Four Intensive Workshops. Woven Throughout the Year. Included in Your Training.
Some conversations deserve more than a chapter in a manual.
Throughout the 12 month Academy Training, you'll participate in four dedicated intensive workshops that take us deeper into areas of care that intersect with every part of the human experience.
These workshops aren't add-ons or optional extras. They're an intentional part of your training, creating space to explore identity, culture, systemic inequity, accessibility, sexuality, relationships and the ways each can shape someone's experience of care.
Because full life-spectrum care isn't only about understanding what someone is moving through.
It's about understanding the whole person moving through it.

Amy Silva
Hi, I’m Amy Silva, and I’m passionate about empowering doulas to grow into confident, compassionate, and skilled birth workers. With years of experience supporting families through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, loss, and even end-of-life transitions, I believe in the importance of holding space for all of life’s major changes. From the beginning of life to its final stages, everyone deserves care, support, and advocacy during these sacred moments.
As your mentor, I am committed to guiding you through the complexities of doula work, whether it’s supporting physiological birth, offering grief and loss support, or helping families navigate the postpartum period. I believe that doulas should not only be strong advocates for their clients but also encourage their clients to advocate for themselves, helping them honour their beliefs and make empowered decisions.
Janet Handy
Janet is a full-spectrum doula, reproductive justice advocate, abortion support advocate. Passionate about challenging traditional expectations of doula work, Janet brings an unapologetically authentic, inclusive, and compassionate approach to her teaching.
With a focus on fertility, abortion support, reproductive justice, identity, intimacy, and informed choice, Janet encourages emerging doulas to think beyond conventional definitions of care and embrace the full spectrum of reproductive experiences.
Through honest conversations, thoughtful education, and a little bit of rebellion, Janet empowers students to challenge assumptions, advocate for autonomy, and build practices that reflect their own values and identities. Her teaching reinforces the belief that there is no single way to be a doula, and that meaningful support begins with compassion, choice, and the courage to do things differently.

Testimonials
“When I met Amy just to talk about being a doula I knew I wanted her to be my mentor and asked about the mentorship program. She explained it to me and I knew it would be very beneficial to my career and future as a doula. Once I started the program it blew my mind how much we learned and how important to know what she was explaining to us. She helps us all learn so much. I am thankful to have the mentorship program and her. Can’t wait to see what we learn next.” — Shannon (ShanTastic Doula)
